Haihoutes

The picturesque little village of Haihoutes or at least whatever remains of it is situated on the road from the Asclepeion towards Zia just before reaching Assomatos. The village is abandoned for the most part although a very popular taverna/mezedopoleio has managed to rekindle a certain interest in the area. The owners of the taverna have also created a little museum and you can also visit the church of Aghios Dimitrios.

Megalo Horio

Megalo Horio is the capital of Tilos and is home to about 250 inhabitants most of which are involved in agricultural activities. The village has maintained its traditional look, most houses are built out of stone and a walk in the narrow alleys is a very agreeable experience. The people are friendly and helpful. There is a small museum in the village with a few findings from the Chardakio cave and some other places on the island.

Mikro Chorio

Mikro Chorio is a beautiful abandoned village on the island of Tilos, well worth the visit, probably the highlight of my visit to Tilos. It is weird to walk around in the now silent walkways and to admire the mill stones that can be found here and there as well as the fortifications that date back to the era of the Knights of St John. A kind of eery feeling grabs you, as if the place was haunted and the people had been driven away. In actual fact the village was gradually abandoned in the 1960s and now only a couple of churches are maintained and taken care of. There is also a bar available that operates during the summer months.

Livadia

The village of Livadia is the main port of the island of Tilos. Its inhabitants, roughly 300, earn their living by cultivating the lands and by engaging in tourism activities especially during the summer months. It is a quaint little village that has kept its traditional traits. Notice the typical Italian architecture of the police station. There are plenty of rooms to let and a number of nice restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat. 

Assomatos

The "district" of Assomatos is the biggest of the Asfendiou area and is situated at the foot of the Dikaios Mountain range. It takes its name from the Church of Assomatos which lies at its center and has consistently contributed to the development the local community. Through donations and the running of an oil press in the early twentieth century its wealth grew and was used to extend loans to local farmers and businessmen while a number of schools were also built and supported by the Church.

The houses of the area were traditionally built of stone and were orthogonal or Γ shaped. The roof was made of timber or bamboo thatch.
